Cologne's fasinating history delivered directly to your earholes

Willem Fromms completed his bachelor’s and then master’s degree in modern history at the University of Bonn in 2016 and had been turning over the idea for a history podcast since summer 2019.

Even as a small boy he was fascinated by the history of Cologne and in kindergarten was an enthusiastic member of the Kölner Dom AG (Cologne Cathedral Club), making field trips to the cathedral to discover every angle and level of the building.

Willem decided early on that his podcast about Cologne would be firstly in English, as his intend was to reach an international audience. Too often Germany is reduced in the media abroad to Berlin, Bavaria and Oktoberfest. Willem wanted to offer a different perspective. Focusing on the city with more history than any other major German city. The city of Cologne on the Rhine. Over 2,000 years old, founded by Emperor Augustus himself. Elevated as a Roman city by Empress Agrippina a few generations later.

By the start of 2020 Willem had gathered enough information and courage to kick off and so the “History of Cologne” podcast went live for the first time January 2020. Since then gaining an international audience with over 80 percent of his listeners from the US, UK and other English speaking countries.

Dispite Willem's academic background the podcast should not be seen as an academic program; but as  infotainment for anyone with an interest in our shared past.

The podcast follows mostly a chronological order and has a tri-weekly schedule. You'll find the “History of Cologne Podcast” wherever you listin: Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast, Amazon Music, Overcast, deezer etc. Or click here for links.
